Diversity – a change to our thinking

Maree Judd – March 2019

In light of the recent attacks in Christchurch, there has been much said about Diversity and inclusion within the wider Muslim community and NZ in general.

We continue to talk so much about bringing more diversity into our workplaces .. now more than ever this will start becoming more of a reality.

The bigger questions now is how … how do we do this when we have tighter immigration restrictions on those individuals looking to work, live and build a life here .. how do we maintain that balance of local NZ’ers versus migrants … how do engage the wide diversity in our workplaces ..

One thing is clear – it’s not one shoe size fits all mentality.

Some advise I gave a client recently was to sit down and have a “think tank session” over a cuppa with your employees .. asking what’s important to them .. what matters, how we can be more desirable as a workplace offering diversity and inclusion .. how can better promote this amoungst our wider teams, external recruiters to become an employer of choice.

HOW ? … COMMUNICATION is a first step… talk to your people ..

And although I am not here to share my political views – praise goes out to our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern for her handling of the attacks .. and in her words simply … “

….. “In NZ, we represent diversity, kindness, compassion, a home for those who share our values”

“They are us,”
